Get Involved: Executive Board 2021-2022 Applications

The Columbia University chapter of the Grey Matters Journal is currently recruiting the Executive Board for the 2021-2022 academic year. The application is now available and will close at 11:59pm on on Saturday, May 29th.  Interviews will be held Thursday, June 3rd and Friday, June 4th. Here is a list of all the positions that are available. Detailed descriptions follow.

  • Senior Editor - Lay Review

  • Senior Editor - Scientific Review

  • Diversity Director

  • Social Media Director

Senior Editor: Lay Review Division
  • Create applications for General Body Lay Reviewers, read through applications, and select members (with help from Editing Coordinator)

  • Make lay review training materials and lead lay review training at the beginning of the semester (Materials from last year are available for reference)

  • Oversee general body lay review edits. Read and comment on 3-4 drafts per week and hold at least 1 mid-semester check in with all general editors

  • Send weekly lay review division emails noting deadlines for the next week (Maybe shoutouts from the last week!)

  • Attend weekly E-Board meetings (and all team meetings when called by the Editor in Chief)

  • Sit in on at least one pod meeting per week

Senior Editor: Scientific Review Division
  • Create application for General Body Scientific Reviewers, read through applications, and select members (with help from Editing Coordinator)

  • Make scientific review training materials and lead scientific review training at the beginning of the semester (Materials from last year are available for reference).

  • Oversee general body scientific review edits. Read and comment on 3-4 drafts per week and hold at least 1 mid-semester check in with all general editors

  • Send weekly scientific review division emails noting deadlines for the next week (Maybe shoutouts from the last week!)

  • Attend weekly E-Board meetings (and all team meetings when called by the Editor in Chief)

  • Ensure that all citations are correct and complete prior to publication.

  • Sit in on at least one pod meeting per week

Diversity Director

Foster an inclusive and diverse organization, specifically making sure that Grey Matters CU’s articles, art, and team in general represent diverse and inclusive perspectives. 

  • Reach out to diversity, equity, and inclusion offices to gain some insight and potentially collaborate with their offices. 

  • Create and maintain a database of individuals available campus-wide to provide training and workshops on diversity-related topics; serve as point of contact for campus inquiries on diversity training options.

  • Help recruit a diverse and inclusive general body, articles, and art. 

  • Plan diversity training for the entire Grey Matters body (work with accessibility to make a presentation/training) 

  • Create and implement a semester long diversity/inclusion project

  • Be available for “DEI Office Hours” during pod meetings

  • Have a meeting with writers and artists whose topics are related to diversity to ensure DEI standards are met

Social Media Director

Create original, visually appealing, and scientifically accurate content to be posted on our social media pages (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) at least once a week. Specifically:

  • Maintain a content series of your choice (weekly fun facts, weekly professor/student features, etc) over the course of both semesters 

  • Advertise major GMCU-related events including application releases, issue drops, and speaker events

  • Engage/incorporate general body members into our social media presence in a manner of your choice 

  • Create aesthetically pleasing posts for all of the above occasions, which should be unified by a common color scheme and font 

  • Orchestrate mutual event advertising with related clubs
